March 30, 2008
It has now been just over a week since Caitlin arrived home and time passes quickly when you're on the go! Caitlin had dialysis treatments on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, her PT evaluation on Monday with therapy on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, then met with her PCP on Thursday afternoon. I'm not sure who is more worn out at this time, her or me!!! She is definitely getting stir-crazy here at the house - the only time she gets out and about is for medical reasons. I took her to a local restaurant yesterday and after about 45 minutes she was asking if it was time to go home. Her stamina has taken a hit with the infection that she had plus the lingering after effects of the renal failure. Her blood work is being monitored thru the dialysis clinic and she is now on a special diet due to her high potassium. Her blood pressure has been trending higher so she is on medication for that (a loop diuretic - the MD's think her high blood pressure is being caused by the fluid still in/on her) and because she's not eating, she has now been placed on a medication to enhance her appetite. With her renal medications and OTC vitamins that she is taking plus these new meds you'd think you were looking at an older person's medication regimen, not that of an 18-year-old. She has been receiving injections of epigen (sp?) to enhance her red blood count because her hemoglobin was down to 8.5 this last week and to see if that will prevent another blood transfusion. She is also receiving IV iron during her dialysis treatments. All in all, she is doing well at this point in her recovery considering where she was just 3 weeks ago. I continue to be on leave of absence from my jobs and will continue to take her to her appointments. I want to thank all of you wonderful folks that have offered to help in any way possible, it is very much appreciated. I have had so many people call me or come up to me to tell me that they continue to pray for Caitlin's full recovery. I thank you for the all the messages of support, love, and caring that I and my family have been shown. Chris
